WHY IT'S NOTEWORTHY A low-key vendor of the standard Middle Eastern menu, the Shishkabab House is better than you might expect, given the location and the typical quietude of the dining room. It is well-known among Muslims for being 100 percent halal. (Halal is the Islamic equivalent of kosher, and is a criterion of quality, as well.)

WHAT'S GOOD The restaurant is next door to the Kased Brothers meat market. It specializes in halal meats, but an extra quality increment comes in to achieve that. The Shishkebab House buys those meats, most of which is farmed locally. As a result, the food here has a noticeable uptick in quality, particularly those involving lamb. They also cook dishes using goat meat, adding another increment of interest.

BACKSTORY The restaurant opened shortly after Hurricane Katrina, taking over the former location of the Fortune Gardens Chinese restaurant.

DINING ROOM
An L-shaped room is rarely busy, but everything is freshly cooked and vividly delicious. It's a family operation, and sometimes the younger members get involved.
