Map.Casual.DS MC V Website ANECDOTES AND ANALYSIS Of all the Asian cuisines that have managed to penetrate the New Orleans restaurant community, the cooking of Thailand is the most interesting and exciting. While most Chinese restaurants have gone over to buffets and cheap prices, and most Japanese restaurants offer the same menu of sushi as every other, and Vietnamese restaurant customers are obsessed with noodle soup, the Thai cooks–with the possible exception of the buffets–engage my palate…

New Orleans Shrimp Spring Rolls

New Orleans Shrimp Spring Rolls Another use for red remoulade sauce, in a place you might not expect to find it. It may seem strange, but remoulade sauce and pasta go well together. This is especially true of the rice noodles used in Southeast Asian cooking. And shrimp, of course. Shrimp: Leafy tops of a bunch of celery 1 bay leaf 1 Tbs. Tabasco 1/2 lemon, sliced 2 Tbs. salt 1 lb. shrimp, 25-30 count 1/2 cup red remoulade sauce (see recipe) Rolls: 12 round rice paper wrappers 8 oz….

Singha Thai. CBD: 828 Gravier St. 504-581-2205.

I’ve found that some restaurants go well beyond being popular, and become so adored by their regulars that one can’t take the comments you hear about it seriously. ¶ Singha Thai is such a place. A side effect of this is that a certain number of people go to the restaurant with wildly high expectations triggered by the loyal fans. ¶ Any reports you hear that Singha Thai is the best Thai restaurant in America (or the worst), that it’s a terrific bargain or a total ripoff, that portions are enormous or minuscule, or anything else extreme should be ignored. The reality: here is the standard Thai menu, turned out reasonably well, if not always brilliantly. More to come. . .

Chill Out Cafe is a standard American breakfast diner in the early part of its schedule, but evolves into a Thai bistro later. The name and the premises seem more about the diner stuff, but in fact it’s the Thai food that’s more worth coming for. The owners and staff are cheerful and welcoming. WHAT’S GOOD Breakfast is served all day. The only thing Asian about…

Thai Chili Covington: 1102 N US 190. 985-809-0180. Map.CasualAE DC DS MC V WHY IT’S NOTEWORTHY The Mandeville-Covington corridor on the North Shore boasts a greater concentration of Thai restaurants than any other part of the New Orleans area. More gratifying is that all of them are pretty good. This is one of the best, with a lengthy menu and the ability (which I’ve tested on a few occasions) to put out almost any Thai dish you may have enjoyed elsewhere. WHAT’S GOOD The menu is composed almost entirely of…

Thai Pepper Mandeville: 1625 US 190. 985-624-3057. Map.Casual.AE DC DS MC V WHY IT’S NOTEWORTHY The North Shore experienced a boom in Thai restaurants in the late Oughts, going from zero outlets for the exciting food of Thailand to eight now. This one has been open longest, with a fine record of consistency. The menu is long even by the standards of Thai restaurants, and includes all the classics. More than the usual number of Thai salads are here, all big enough to make an entree. WHAT’S GOOD The menu…

Map.Casual.AE MC VWebsite WHY IT’S NOTEWORTHY The best demonstration of the health of Thai cookery on the North Shore is that this one coexists with a related but different and equally good Thai restaurant across the highway. Although both were put together by the same guy and appear to have the same menu, in fact the cooking style of Thai Spice is noticeably different. I go back and forth from one to another, doubling my pleasure. WHAT’S GOOD If I had to pick…

Map.CasualAE DS MC VWebsite WHY IT’S NOTEWORTHY La Thai reversed a trick that hip New Orleans-style restaurants played for years. It incorporated Asian ingredients and techniques into local dishes. Here the base menu is Thai, and the fusion elements are Cajun. While those looking for the Thai standards will find them, the unique and most interesting parts of the menu are the hybrids. WHAT’S GOOD No-borders creativity informs the kitchen, and first-class ingredients and polished preparations complete the…
