Turtle Soup @ Bon Ton Cafe
When a pretty good restaurant leaves its menu alone for a long time, it inevitably becomes famous for a few dishes on it. So it is with the Bon Ton Cafe. The etouffees, crabmeat au gratin, redfish Bon Ton, and bread pudding are all held in high repute by its regulars. So is the turtle soup. While there are better versions around town, this one is reliably delicious the year round. The turtle component is minimal, but the flavor--aromatic with lemon peel and cloves (I think that's what I'm tasting) makes it unique. It becomes a wonderful welcome into dinner during this colder part of the year. Especially for us old-timers.
