This Saturday night, I invite you to join me and a few dozen choral singers for an evening of live music over dinner. The food and the service come from the Quail Farm outside Abita Springs. The music plays with a quiet volume for the most part, which not only allows conversation but also the ability to enjoy the music of the NorthLake Performing Arts Society. This is the chorale that I frequently talk about in this publication's Dining Diary. Many of these are highly-trained singers (I make no claims on my own behalf) and what comes out is a great sound.
The price is $55 inclusive, and begins with a carving table cooking and slicing cochon du lait. Shrimp remoulade is the most promising appetizer, followed by miniature chicken brochettes, chicken cordon bleu Abita Wellington, Creole eggplant sticks, fried catfish chips. The high point of the menu is Creole smoked quail, a specialty of the Quail Farm's kitchen, and with good reason.
Dinner ends with dessert, ranging from crepes with pastry creme, fresh fruit and brandy. The evening wraps up with a fruit and cheese buffet.
Meanwhile, the NPAS singers will perform a range of music from solos and trios to large slices of the whole chorus. Hardly a style of music will be left out as we warble everything from the Beatles to semi-classical music. It's a great way to spend an evening, especially if the two of you have something nice to celebrate.
