If ever there were a menu to set my heart aflutter, this is it. Kid food, as Tom calls such things. But even Tom would like this kid food. It will be a gourmet version of all the comfort things we all love, because the owner of this place hails from all the classiest great restaurants of New Orleans. In the kitchen will be expats from all those places. In a sports bar.
Azul, the longtime dream of Danny Millan (see the Fourth of July post on these pages), opens next week on the 18th. It is located exactly where it should be, on the corner of Harrison and West End in family-friendly Lakeview.
A quick look at the menu is thrilling. Spinach dip, hummus, pork eggrolls, empanadas, pretzel bites, croquettes, soft shell shrimp. Soft shell shrimp? Yes, Danny loves them and you must try them, he says.
Where have you ever seen a sports bar offering duck with a raspberry reduction? Alongside a kids menu featuring noodles with butter and parmesan cheese? Pork sliders, but also a double cut pork chop?
This menu is the culmination of a lifetime of serving people and knowing what they like. And doing it well. I’ll just have to talk him into throwing some cheese and bacon on those fresh-cut fries.
You can bet they’ll be a great wine and beer selection and interesting drinks. And famous patrons in the booth next to yours. Danny knows everyone.
