The restaurants along North Peters Street are of a different breed than those in the rest of the French Quarter. Smaller, in older buildings with a lot of raffish charm even by the standards of the Vieux Carre, and with adventuresome menus, they are also something of a bargain--Coolinary the year round, sometimes. A good example of this is St. Lawrence, in the block of North Peters just past the Custom House. Their special Coolinary menu is a good representative of the kind of food they serve. And the make a value out of it, they go five dollars lower than the Coolinary standard, with three courses for $30. Here's what comes:
Seasonal Market Salad
Summer corn, sungold tomatoes, arugula, reggiano, Steen’s cane vinaigrette
~or~
Market Seafood Gumbo du Jour
~~~~~
Grilled Wild-Caught Gulf Fish
Chef's preparation of the day
~or~
Grilled Angus Hanger Steak
Lyonnaise potatoes, swiss chard, heirloom tomato relish
~or~
Quinoa Pilaf Ratatouille
Summer squash, local peppers, basil-parmesan gremolata
~~~~~
Dessert du Jour
This is the only serious Coolinary menu I've seen available late nights. The restaurant is open for dinner until 2 a.m. every day but Monday. They also have a Coolinary lunch for $20 Wednesday through Sunday. In case you're wondering about the name: St. Lawrence is the patron saint of cooks.
