Wednesday, April 13, 2016. May I Be Permitted To Take The Day Off? A few hours after I write this, I will be on a plane to Los Angeles, where my son Jude and grandson Jackson live, and where the latter will be christened this Saturday. That comes on the heels of the last rites for my big sister's husband Walter--as close a family member as I can imagine--yesterday. And, the night before that, the Best Chefs of Louisiana bash. I'm a little overwhelmed by all this, and I ask for a couple of days off from the full expression of the New Orleans Menu Daily. [caption id="attachment_40222" align="alignnone" width="480"]Soft shell crabs @ Impastato Cellars. Soft shell crabs @ Impastato's.[/caption] But I can't resist the urge to give you something today. The daily Almanac, Recipe, and 500 Best Dishes columns are all here. And I have this report for the Dining Diary: [caption id="attachment_38295" align="alignleft" width="200"]Fettuccine. Fettuccine.[/caption]For weeks I have had soft shell crabs done Joe Impastato's way on my mind, along with the suggestion of Impastato's incomparable fettuccine alfredo. To fill out this menu in the style to which I used to be accustomed, I had my first martini this year. (Really, half of a martini. They serve enormous drinks there, and I don't feel good about going over my one-cocktail rule.) It all was as relaxing as it was delicious. And that's that. I'll be back tomorrow with a little more meat, and to full publication Monday. The radio show will be hosted today by Chef Duke LoCicero from Café Giovanni, and Friday by Daniel Lelchuk, the Gourmet Cellist. (Ask him about the wine-and-classical-music dinner he and Commander's Palace are presenting in June.
