Doughnuts Galore. By The Hundreds, I Mean.
Mary Ann made a connection when she saw a new book on the subject of doughnuts on my desk at the radio station. She thought a doughnut guy would be good on the show. She found Zach Foster, the guy who owns Blue Dot Donuts. That shop, established by a trio of former policemen, appeared on the Mid-City scene not long after Katrina. Zach--who is also the head doughnut baker in his shop, bought out his partners recently, to the pleasure of a large number of regular customers.
The Blue Dot is best known for its maple and bacon doughnut stick, a very large confection. However, as I walked around the radio facility, it became clear that if you want to awake the doughnut eater spirit, you need a lot of plain old glazed doughnuts. I noticed that the highest-ranked executives in our offices showed a distinct favor for the simple kind.

I was attracted by doughnuts when I was in my pre-teens. My favorites were the basics. I devoured a few of those among the hundred or so I was trying to give away. My favorite was a really light and simple torus, with the flavors of wedding cake. That tasted great, as did a blueberry-based doughnut that bore a kind of camouflage exterior. I'll bet I could pawn this off ast a hogshead-cheese doughnut, but I ate it too soon to play that game.
An expected datum: doughnut bakers (really, they're fryers for the most part) still do get up and start making doughnuts at about two in the morning. They do an enormous business throughout the a.m., then close in mid-afternoon, with the leftover doughnuts sent to charitable agencies whose clients probably welcome a few doughnuts. That's the feel-good aspect of doughnuts today.
I ate enough of Zach's works through the radio show and beyond to be completely unhungry when I left for home. Just as well: I had a lot of nasty weather to work my way home through. It's suppose to rain big-time from now through next Monday.
