Eating Indian, But Just Once A Week

Even though they're open only for dinner on Fridays, Saffron Nola may be the best Indian restaurant in the New Orleans area. It's a colorful little spot on Gretna Boulevard, more or less across the street from where Visko's used to be. It's operated by Arvinder "Dickey" Vilkhu, who spends most of his time as general manager of the Pickwick Club, and in his own catering business. But every Friday night he opens for a la carte service at Saffron. Each Friday presents some new specials, in addition to a regular menu of standards. Most dishes combinw Indian flavors with local ingredients. Here's what's on tonight:

Chaat Bhalla Papdi $6
Crispy flour chips, lentil dumplings appetizer yoghurt and tamarind chutney

Lobster Stuffed Fish Turban $24
Puppy drumfish with a lobster filling and sauce Americaine (a classic creamy sauce)

The above is in addition to the regular menu. They also make their own chutneys and pickles, and sell them by the jar. Charming little place, delightful people. Get a reservation: the place is very popular.
