You know those "Ice On Bridge" signs we see all over the place, but which rarely have any meaning? The ones which, when they were first installed in the 1960s, were made with hinges so they could be kept to be folded over until they were needed--when, it was found, there were not enough personnel to do the unfolding? Well, that notice applies today, as the worst winter storm we've had in quite a long time descends on New Orleans. So, where are we going to go out to eat? Good question. I suspect a lot of restaurants will be closed tonight. If you need to cross a bridge or an overpass to get to the restaurant you're thinking of, it might be the better part of valor to find another spot. That leaves the older parts of town. Which, fortunately, have the greatest number of restaurants. The French Quarter, of course. Magazine Street. Riverbend. Mid-City. Lakeview. Old Metairie. Wherever you choose, call ahead. I expect that staffing and food delivery issues may force a lot of restaurants to close tonight. Things will be better tomorrow, as they always are. This might be the time to cook up your own winter storm.
