A Most Unusual Lenten Fish Fry

And speaking of speckled trout…

One of the most cherished local traditions is our Friday Lenten Fish Fry, used by just about every Catholic parish to raise money for the church. These are usually put on by community organizations like men’s clubs, and the Boy Scouts affiliated with the parish. These people work tirelessly and get really messy, and have lots of fun in the meantime seeing everyone they know. This is a charming cultural throwback to yesteryear, featuring at its core a social community centered around God and family.

These weekly Friday fish fries have gotten pretty fancy in the last few years, with drive-thrus and expanded menus, but in the end, it all goes back to the fish. And the fish and all the rest are secondary to the benefit for the church, and the social benefit to you for participating.

And if you just want to focus on some really good fish, Kristen Essig of Thalia is offering her own version of a Lenten Fish Fry. it will be missing the social camaraderie of the parish, but the fish is wild-caught speckled trout, and so good even our fish-averse daughter loved it.
