Middendorf's Is Back! Incredible!

When we saw the first pictures of the flooding at Manchac and how high the waterline came up the original structure of Middendorf's, our first thought was that the beloved old catfish specialist was surely out of business again. Even though Chef Horst Pfeifer and his wife Karen had raised the kitchen and the new dining room to a point higher than any past or projected flood, could it be enough to rise above the high tide pushed in by Hurricane Isaac?

Middendorf's dining room.

The answer in a word is yes. Even the original old building is back in action, having been builto to stand up to something like this. And the new building was above the flood, and the kitchen and all its utilities had survived. It's almost too good to be true that Middendorf's reopened yesterday (Wednesday, September 12). Same hours, same menu (although I'll bet they might have a shortage of oysters for a little while).

We send our relieved congratulations to Karen and Horst, and ask everybody who loves the thin-cut-catfish capital of the world to get out there and show your support.
