Mussels Mariniere @ La Crepe Nanou
The classic presentation of mussels in French bistros is for the bivalves to be cooked with a steamy, sloshy sauce of wine, herbs, onions, and the juices from the mussels. Fresh-cut pommes frites then are piled atop the mussels. An improvement can be made: push the fries onto a separate plate. That keeps them from getting soggy from the steam. Although the name of this great Uptown French cafe suggests dessert, Nanou's menu covers the entire range of bistro French cooking. You will not soon find better mussels.
