Batproofing. Eggs At La Carreta.

This was to be the day when we were to write the check for the new roof. But the job isn't finished, and the boss hasn't totaled the figures yet. So we have a few more days of scrounging around looking for loose lucre.

Although it's moot now, I can claim to have been right after all about the condition of the old roof. It was rusty on the outside, but I felt it could be painted. And indeed, on none of the panels now lying on the ground has any rust come through the metal even a little bit.

On the other hand, the new roof included a number of improvements that will more than return its cost in holding the value of the house. One of the new features is a sort of gasket that prevents bats from climbing under the metal panels. Fifteen years ago, some eight hundred bats wound up living in our eaves because we didn't have that.

No radio show today. I tried to catch up the backlog created by my taking three days off for Manresa. I know the web site is a bottomless pit, but this is ridiculous. I need to shift some of my load. I wish I could find somebody who is as passionate about restaurants as I am, and who's willing to do all the quotidian stuff, like scrounging up menus and typing them into the system. Sounds like a job for a certain daughter. But she has her own plans.

Mary Ann said that if I wanted to have a meal with her today, it would have to be lunch and would have to be at La Carreta. Doesn't she partake enough of that restaurant already with Mary Leigh? But then, yesterday was her birthday.

I had huevos rancheros (the eggs much overcooked) and choriqueso. The latter--a mixture of chili-cheese dip with the hot Mexican chorizo--is very difficult to stop eating once you start.

A bright spot on the calendar today. Beginning with today's sunset, after six months of retreat, the afternoon gloaming will begin moving later each day. First sign of summer 2013!
