A Little Knowledge Gets Me In Trouble.

Whoever first said that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing knew a lot. The effects described in that adage cause trouble everywhere you look. And quite a bit for me today.

A nagging but minor problem in my main computer wasted enough of my time over the past few months that I thought I should upgrade the operating system to Windows 7. Nobody can accuse me of rushing into such moves. Windows 8 just came out.

I made the decision last week, when I ordered the disks. While waiting for them to arrive, I solved the most vexing issue. In retrospect, I should have stopped right there. But after spending the money, how could I not follow though.

Dear reader, I implore you to avoid that mistake unless you really know what you're doing or have vast amounts of free time you'd like to fill. And maybe not even then. If you want a new version of Windows, go out and buy a new computer. That's what I will do forevermore.

I'll leave out the details and just say that the project ate up the entire weekend, and as of this writing over a week later, it's still taking up time every day.

The day had a few sparkles. Jude strongly recommended the movie "Argo," and the three of us went to see it. It's a superb piece of work, a true story of how a group of American hostages were spirited out of Iran during the crisis in 1979. Aside from brilliant writing, direction, and acting, the tale resounded with me in a way I haven't felt in a long time. The Iran hostage incident took place during the early months of my first major radio talk show. Unlike the one I do now, we talked about food only occasionally. The rest of the four hours every night were filled with standard talk-show conversation. The hostage subject was huge in that year. It was the first time I'd thought about the issues and the people involved in a long time.

I ate too much popcorn for my hypertension issue, but enough to keep me from needing supper. MA and I went home, and I got back on the computer massacree, which did nothing but get worse.
