Steak Tartare @ La Petite Grocery
The French touch in the Grocery's menu makes it a likely spot to look for French bistro dishes like this one. Steak tartare is raw ground or chopped beef with an admixture of enough herbs and seasonings to expand the flavor of the beef. Not many restaurants serve the dish anymore--a lot of people are afraid of eating raw proteins, as we are constantly reminded by notes on menus. But steak tartare made with skill--as is the case here--starts not with pre-ground beef, but with steak chopped or ground to order. It's an appetizer (steak tartare doesn't wear well enough to work as an entree) and is finished with a quail egg.
