One Too Many Meals At La Carreta.

If yesterday was an ordinary day, today was mind-numbing. Mary Ann had a book signing at Octavia Books in mid-afternoon, forcing lunch up to noon. We wind up at La Carreta most Sundays these days. Mary Leigh loves the place, and Mary Ann gets pulled along in her wake. I like it too, but we eat there too often.

And the Marys always start with the same thing: a bowl of "choriqueso"--cheese dup into which has been spooned some ground Mexican chorizo. I make two soft tacos with the stuff, and that's already enough to fill me up. But I move on to an entree anyway. Today's was tacos al pastor. What's the deal with the double corn tortillas lately? Is that the street style for tacos in Mexico? Well, I don't like it. Next time I get this I will ask for the filling on the side and a couple of larger soft corn tortillas.

Ssnkkxxx! What? What? Oh, sorry. . . I must have drifted off for a second there.

My plan was to cut the grass this afternoon. But it was one of those days when the lawn tractor refused to start. This is as unpredictable as the cloud patterns in the sky. My nephew says to pour some gasoline into the engine somewhere. But since on the best of days I still have to jump-start the tractor from a portable battery that throws sparks, it doesn't sound like the safest idea.

So I gave it up and made the mistake of sitting down at my desk to rebuild parts of the website. That took up the rest of the p.m. until bedtime, and put me in a foul mood. I need a vacation. The girls are taking one for two weeks starting on the Fourth of July, but they waited too long to make those plans for me to join them. Well, being home alone is something like a vacation.

Maybe I'll shave off my beard. I've had it for forty years a now. I wonder what I look like underneath? I have this idea every year at this time.
