Sunday, November 15, 2009. Another Hamburger Day. Cat Walking. Fall is looking good at the Cool Water Ranch. If we can have weather like this for Thanksgiving, my year will be complete. The trees are giving better colors than usual, particularly the Chinese tallow trees. The fall display is worth putting up with their protruding roots during the summer.
Our family resolution to cook at home on Sundays, no matter what, has held firm. But we cook the same things too often. Hamburgers, for example. That's a sop to Mary Leigh, but MA and I love making them, too. And the fresh-cut fries, which are irresistible. But still I feel ashamed that we're not doing something more ambitious.
I meandered through my trail through the woods this afternoon, and as I did, the cat Twinnery walked along the road that parallels my route. When I emerged about 200 yards from where I entered, he was waiting for me. I crossed the road and entered the trail on that side. Twinnery walked with me down the trail, then across the meadow, all the way home, meowing as we rolled along. I don't think I've ever taken so long a walk with a cat before. He must have learned this from the dog. It's more evidence that animals communicate somehow. I'm convinced that they do.
