Surprise Supper At Acme.
Mary Leigh called in mid-afternoon, en route to the North Shore to pick up something she needed at home. As long as she was here and I am home alone, she said, it would be nice for the two of us to have lunch. Specifically, at the Acme Oyster House. A good chance exists that Mary Ann incited this, but I will choose to believe that my daughter just likes being with me.
She had her usual wedge salad after we did in a half-dozen grilled oysters. Last night's feast at the Windsor Court made me lighten up with grilled fish. The Acme does many things well, but grilling fish is not one of them. The species was redfish, but it either came in frozen or it wasn't cooked long enough, because the right half of the fish was barely cuttable with a knife, let alone a fork.
Come to think of it, the Acme ought to update its menu and techniques. Once you're past the raw and grilled oysters, the fried seafood, and the salads, not much is left in the entree department. The Covington Acme--which just a year ago often had a waiting list for seats--has been much less active or good the last four or five times we went there.
They had a good little dessert I don't remember from previous visits. Pecan cobbler? I'm not sure I've ever heard of that anywhere. Tried it. Not bad. I can't keep on eating desserts like this, though.
During lunch, our conversation focused on the ways young men and women can attract one another without going too far out on limbs. For someone with a lot of savvy, style, good looks, and confidence, ML is doing no better at this than either of her parents did.
She came home but didn't stay. She picked up what she needed, then forgot it on the kitchen counter. A round-trip lake crossing for nothing. I hope our lunch together was some consolation.
