Weather Touches. Frustrated Supper Order.
A blustery, tree-shaking day, with threatening clouds that didn't deliver much rain this far south. Farther north, though, this was quite literally a killer storm system. About 300 people died in some of the biggest tornadoes imaginable. From Arkansas through Alabama, towns got blown to smithereens. The pictures made the aftermath look like Katrina.
Almost as soon as the shocking details were on television, the Wishful Thinking Party began putting out apologies for the storm, consulting the few scientists who agree with their worldview. And guess what? We should relax. Global warming is not to blame. Not even though the increase in such weather has long been one of the predicted effects of climate change. Of course, this is one of those issues that can be argued only a priori. But the strongly possible effects are so bad that it seems dumb to take chances. If the predictions don't come true, then so what? Maybe driving 100 miles per hour can be done safely, but why would you want to?
Mary Ann spent the day on the South Shore, and called to take my order for dinner. Take-out food is so deeply compromised it really almost makes no difference where it comes from, but a flavor got in my head. Could she stop at Ristorante Filippo for his chicken spiedini? Right on her way, she said. But they didn't have it today. It's on the regular menu, but they seem to have it only one day out of four. Which is frustrating, because it's a great dish: chicken stuffed with bread crumbs, garlic, olive oil, herbs, etc. We went over the menu and I heard nothing that I thought would make the trip home successfully. We talked about her going to Impastato's, where they have a pork spiedini. But the parking lot was jammed.
I wound up with half a roast beef poor boy from Bear's. That's really good, but strictly a stop-gap measure. Next time this happens (and I know it will), I'll ask MA to throw away the flaccid French fries before she leaves the shop.
