South America is home to so many Asians that several people with Japanese names have become heads of state. And if that's not convincing enough, consider the dish called tiraditos, which has become so popular in Peru that the hippest Hispanic restaurants in this country have begun serving it. Example: Mizado, in the Cemetery District on Metairie Road at I-10. The Taste Buds (they're the guys who brought us Zea) make tiraditos with an assortment of fish, but with an emphasis on tuna. In them you find the marinades that make ceviche what it is applied to sashimi-cut tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. It has the flavors of both the Japanese and Peruvian raw fish dishes, but more exciting than either on its own. Also appealing: tiraditos are typically served in appetizer sizes, giving possibilities for a wildly-varying lunch or dinner.
