Pizza Hunt.

The Marys were up and out into temperatures in the low forties a little after five a.m. Mary Leigh is taking a solo trip to carouse around in Los Angeles with Jude for a few days. It's strange that she is leaving cool, bright weather behind for the rainy, sticky, cloudy clime over Southern California right now. Jude says that the drippy conditions will give way to cool, smog-free weather tomorrow. He is eager to have another mouth to feed at his house. He just bought a grill for his deck, and they're cooking on it every night.

It's a gas grill. I'd chew him out for that, but he doesn't have much choice. Charcoal and wood grills are against the law in Los Angeles--another necessary anti-smog, anti-fire measure. I wonder if there's a place on earth that doesn't have earthquakes or hurricanes, droughts or massive fires, floods or tornadoes, unbearable heat or cold. I can't think of such a place. If it exists, it's probably populated by crazy people.

I think I'll just stay here for the duration.

Mary Ann wouldn't be home until late afternoon. She says that I must feed myself with another chunk of the leftover Bosco's muffuletta. Or a slice of pizza, of which there are a dozen in the freezer, she says. I looked and found only a few slices from Pizza Man. Those would be months old. I tried one anyway. Freezing doesn't stop deterioration, just slows it down. These were compromised. I ate one slice. When MA returned, she magically found four or five more slices from Carmelo, much younger and better. I ate two and called it an eating day. Conditions like this almost guarantee weight loss for a guy like me who would prefer to skip the meal than to eat something awful.

My work agenda was too full for me to allow time for thinking about eating much, anyway. I wrote my review of Mondo for CityBusiness, and pushed ahead on the daily projects to make room tomorrow for a lot of out-of-the-house activities promising serious dining for a change.
