WHY IT'S NOTEWORTHY
Chalmette never had a lot of restaurants above the sandwich-shop level, but the tremendous population loss as a result of Katrina flooding has made it tough for anything to come back. Armond's is one of the better new places, with a menu of Italian food and seafood. It's small and not much in terms of atmosphere, but the cooking is good and generous.

WHAT'S GOOD
The center of the menu is fried seafood, made into platters or poor boys. Unless they get very busy, the seafood is fried to order and comes out with a crackly, well-seasoned crust, in very large quantities. The other poor boys are too big for the appetite of anyone not working in house reconstruction. The pasta dishes with the rich, Chef Paul-inspired cream sauces are better than one expects.

BACKSTORY
Larry Armond opened his eatery in 2007, as Chalmette was just beginning to rebuild from nearly total Katrina destruction. At first, the operation ran in FEMA trailers. He died two years later, but his wife Cindy keeps the place running, seemingly more popular than ever.

DINING ROOM
More than thirty customers makes Armond's SRO, but there's usually a a table for you to be served. The usual memorabilia of the disaster is on view; we never seem to get tired of that.
