500BestSquareBean Soup @ La Carreta

Many of the entrees at La Carretta come with bean soup, which takes the place of the refried beans and rice that have brought down Mexican platters for many years. This bean soup is terrific, made with pinto beans and pork chopped into small dice, all awash in a peppery broth and a scattering of white cheese over the top. The stuff is so good that I get a cup or sometimes even a bowl of it almost every time I go. The consistent excellence of the flavor makes me suspicious that they may get the soup from a commissary. On the other hand, everything else at La Carreta is made in house, so this probably is, too. It's one of those simple supporting actors on the plate, something I look forward to eating on every visit.
