Dessert is something I rarely do, preferring virtual desserts, by just imagining them as I read a menu. I'm never really tempted. Tom surprised me at Del Porto last evening by ordering a chocolate dessert-something he never does. It did sound unusual, though. A chocolate crostada. This word keeps popping up on menus everywhere, so I was curious to see it used with chocolate. Also the marshmallow gelato piqued my interest.
What arrived at the table was a pretty, though not arresting-looking dessert. The crust was so flaky you could hear it being cut, but it was the chocolate paste that was cradled by the crust that stopped me in my tracks. As an obsessive chocolate consumer, this had a complexity beyond the others. It was. . .divine! The combination of the marshmallow (and I'm not usually a fan of this substance in any iteration) with the chocolate, crust, and gelato, was an explosion of flavors so captivating it made me wonder if I should push past virtual desserts and move on to the real ones. This chocolate crostada was divinely delicious, just like everything else at Del Porto.
