Tom and I shared enthusiasm for the talents of Keith and Nellie Frentz at Lola, which we could call a neighborhood restaurant for us. It is fast casual with delicious food set in a most interesting place. Lola is in the old train depot in downtown Covington. We have loved everything that has been in this building. Joel Dondis was the first with his superb fast casual place, then the Frentz’s moved in and took full advantage of the railroad connection, actually renovating an old rail car into another dining space. It completes one of the most eclectic restaurant environments in the entire metro area. Both the exposed brick depot and the rail car are connected by an outdoor deck. I love this place.
The food is much better than it has to be. This is a Southshore A-list couple and thankfully, old habits of excellence die hard.
The salmon salad makes the list of seafood dishes I remember because it is the most interesting and best of the lot (of salmon salads) in my experience. Besides the beautiful fish, here is a late of mixed greens, fresh avocado, copious amounts of Bleu cheese crumbles, tomatoes that are red and taste like tomatoes, and a hard boiled egg cut in half. I feel healthier just eating this salad.
The picture reflects an overdone piece of fish, which is exactly as I request it every time. Another reason I love the place - they adhere to a timeless principle: give the customer what they want.
