[title type="h3"]Annual United Way Gumbo Cookoff [/title]
Fifteen years ago, the United Way of Greater New Orleans held a gumbo-cooking competition, hoping to have some fun with the best gumbo chefs in the city's restaurant and bringing in some dollars for United Way's many programs. I was one of the judges that year, and remember well how tremendous the variety of gumbos was, and how many people turned out for it. They pack the house every year, but the gumbo never runs out.
This year's Got Gumbo? is tomorrow, Wednesday March 11, in the Grand Ballroom of the Royal Sonesta Hotel. Sixteen restaurants will be there, proving once again how many different ways there are of making gumbo. Some of these are rather far out, but even the basic chicken-andouille gumbos and seafood gumbos will show a great range of imagination and cooking skill.
The price is a steal at $25 $30 at the door). Tickets are available at the door, or online. It starts at 5 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m. Aside from the gumbos, you will find a few appetizers and desserts, with wine and other beverages. You will not need supper after this. Because the prizes for the winning restaurants are serious, the restaurants make what will probably be the best gumbos you eat all year.
All the money goes to the support of our local United Way.
