The All-American Dish

It’s National Burger Day today and if there was ever a dish to be celebrated, that would be it. The hamburger is arguably America’s signature dish.

There are so many burgers out there now since Houston's burger ruled, that the Houston’s burger and its clone, the burger at Boulevard, look boring by comparison. They’re still good, or good enough but there are far better burgers everywhere.

Sliders are now a big part of the burger scene, and the vogue has switched to smashburgers. Burger joints pop up seemingly overnight. And places that have had burgers on the menu for years have upped their game. Walk-On’s had a traditional burger as they have for years, but they are now hand-formed, a difference proudly stated on the menu. Good for them. This new burger is far better.

Small Sliders is literally popping up all over, offering a small smashburger undorned. It’s a tasty little thing with really bad fries as an accompaniment. Bad fries eclipse another smashburger that is new to town. Burger Nerds is a simple place with a simple menu featuring smashburgers at their most basic. It’s a decent burger but nothing more.

Bub’s preceded the nerds, and it’s a better burger.

For a really great burger it’s hard to beat a burger from a steakhouse. Ruth’s Chris had a great burger until they decided to up their game by making the bun garlic bread. Next time I will get it and ask them to hold the “improvements.”

Since it was National Burger Day I went back to Boulevard to have the burger that reminds me of the original Houston’s burger. It was fine but nothing more. But when you are talking about a burger, fine is fine. It’s the national dish
