First Impressions of Nole

When Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro gasped its last, many people wondered what would become of the gigantic space on St. Charles Avenue. If you are one of those people, wonder no more. Nole is here. The building is owned by Allison Copeland, (yes, that Copeland), and the restaurant shares the ground floor with a hotel called The Coach House. There is outdoor seating by the front entrance, which is off St. Charles on the way to the garage????  But who would sit there when the interior space is so spectacular? All the south of the border cliches are there, but done in such an artful way that it keeps you guessing what is happening here. It is the style of standard American-Mexican (really Latin American) eateries, but so far above in style, one wonders what statement is the food to make? We’re not sure. Even after eating it. On the table was chorizo and andouille queso, which came in a nice ramekin with fried okra garnish but was mysteriously devoid of chorizo and andouille. This wasn’t good enough to press on past two bites. Chips were great-perfect light color and strength, though not strong enough to stand up to the queso that had solidified into a cheesy nothing. Guacamole was pretty ordinary too, except for a garnish of pecans. We got a brisket taco which was the best thing on the table, but that doesn’t mean it was good. Just good enough. A perfect-sized portion of duck confit empanadas was served with pico that was equally flat. But here was a hint of what is happening. Inside these empanadas, which appeared to be encased in wontons rather than pastry, were sunflower seeds. These seed sightings mean “we aim to be authentic.” So it looks like the goal with the food is familiar American-style Mexican (Latin American), but a cut above, exactly like the environment. The space is a stunner, and we hope in time the food will catch up. We want to love this place, but for now it is Welcome, but Wanting.
