College Inn Chef Opens New Shop[/title] Last weekend, the brothers who own Olivier's restaurant on Decatur Street published a simple statement saying that the restaurant had+ closed. No reason given. If I had to guess, I'd say that it probably has something to do with real estate issues. The restaurant originated on Dreux Street in Gentilly in 1980, taking over an old restaurant bar called the Canopy. Armand Olivier Jr. created the menu, with his sons taking over when the restaurant moved to the French Quarter in 1989. I always found the place very good, with an old style of cooking, attributed to three previous generations of the family. People visiting New Orleans found Olivier's to be as ideal a rendering of Creole cooking as could be had. Which is exactly what it was. [divider type=""] On the other hand, a new restaurant has emerged from the ashes of another closing. Where the Great Wall Chinese restaurant was for many years (the owners retired), Brad McGehee cleared the room out, brightened it, and opened the Blue Line Sandwich Company. Brad was for the past three years the chef of Ye Olde College Inn, bringing to that old neighborhood restaurant the best food it has ever had. Who would have thought that beef Wellington would be served regularly at the College Inn? The new name is a reference to the old interurban streetcar that once ran on Metairie Road. (Talk about obscure!) I expect this is going to be a very good place for a light lunch. The sandwiches will not be poor boys. There is also breakfast.
