Since the beginning of the internet, Tom Fitzmorris has published an online version of The New Orleans Menu, a publication on New Orleans restaurants that had been in print since the late 1970s. What made nomenu.com an indispensable resource for restaurants and diners was Hurrican Katrina. Tom, evacuated in Washington, DC, working from a makeshift office in the basement of his brother-in-law’s mother, calling restaurants all day long to update their status. That’s how “the list” that became the core of nomenu.com. was born. People who were vendors checked “the list” to see if their restaurant customers were open, and diners who were as passionate as Tom about returning to their New Orleans eating checked “the list” each day.
This morning we at nomenu.com went back to Katrina mode and started talking to all the restaurateurs we know about their plans in the face of the “situation,” as we are calling it. In the many conversations we had, it became quickly apparent that things were changing on a minute-to-minute basis. Here is our first list, and keep checking for the updates throughout each day.
We want to remain the calm in the storm, which is what Tom came to be known for back then. Please stick with us - we're all in this together, united by a shared love for our city and its extraordinary food.
