Getting Ready For One Of My Favorite Holidays.
After thirty-four years of publishing an April Fool restaurant report, my readers expect it of me. I have three good ideas this year, so I went ahead and did all three. Which is ridiculous, given the presence of a few other projects waiting on me. But I love writing this stuff, and gave hours to it.
Mary Ann brought me a ham and cheese poor boy from Sammy's in Metairie. Sammy's was a grocery store-poor boy shop evolution in Bucktown for years. They moved last year to a spot on Veterans, pure sandwich shop. I've heard good things. I warmed the sandwich until the bread smelled good, and confirmed what I'd heard. A ball of potato salad had the texture of mashed, but tasted good enough.
Mary Ann told me one bad thing about the place: a significant presence of video poker. Every time I see those machines in a restaurant, the message I receive is "We can't make it on our food, so we installed these things." Video poker = one less rating star.
