Top Kill Cocktail
My favorite memory of the BP oil spill of two years ago is this drink. It's named for the strategy BP undertook at the time, to try to blow up the top of the well in such a way as to stop the flow. That approach wound up not working, and the disaster continued. We had a radio remote broadcast at Drago's around then, and someone thought it would be a good idea to come up with a cocktail to make fun of it all.
Three of Drago's bartenders worked up new cocktails. The best came from Ivana, who used Stoli Vanil vodka and blue Curacao to make the sea, and chocolate syrup for the oil. The flavor--tinged with chocolate, even though the "oil" hadn't dissolved into the "water"--was delicious. Here it is.
- 2 oz. Stoli vanilla vodka
- 1/2 oz. Blue Curacao
- 1 Tbs. chocolate syrup
1. Put the vodka and Curacao in a shaker with crushed ice and shake for ten seconds.
2. Holding a martini glass so that one side of it is parallel to the counter, squirt the chocolate syrup on the inside of the glass as close to the rim as possible. Rotate the glass as you do this to make the chocolate ooze down the inside of the glass.
3. Strain the shaker contents into the center of the glass. Do this slowly so as not to disturb the shape of the chocolate slick on the inside of the glass.
