The original and last surviving French Market coffee stand, Cafe du Monde purveys one of the essential tastes of New Orleans. Tables spill out of a small indoor room through a covered open-air area and then finally onto the sidewalks of Washington Artillery Park. Coffee and chicory, brewed to the appropriate blue-black potency, is mixed with hot milk to order. Squares of dough are fried by hundreds and served by threes, still hot and dusted with powdered sugar. The servers are rushed and indifferent; many are newcomers to America. A great stop either first thing in the morning or last thing at night.
