It seems to be a requirement that all great neighborhood Creole restaurants must be hard to see. Montrel's is not far from a thoroughfare--just a block off Gentilly Boulevard, near Elysian Fields. (Landmark: Brother Martin High School’s practice field is across the street. Montrel's is a very welcome find in a part of town that has never had much in the way of restaurants. Not only is the kitchen talented but good, but it uses those gifts across a wide range of cooking. They're substantially more ambitious than you might expect. Since the baseline is homestyle New Orleans Creole, the offerings begin with red beans and gumbo, moving through fried chicken and seafood to broiled, stuffed, and grilled seafood dishes. On top of all that, specials are offered daily. They do all of this well and inexpensively. The staff is more helpful than in most neighborhood places. Notes: they're very busy here at lunch, and close early for dinner. If it looks full, look some more. The dining rooms are scattered in an eccentric fashion.
