Taj is the third India-inspired restaurant at this location. The first was a pure Indian restaurant called Old Calcutta, opened in 1996. After a few years, the owners changed the name to Sara's, renovated, and reworked the menu into a mix of Southeast Asian and a few Creole dishes along with a smattering of Indian items. In December 2013 it renovated again, renamed itself Taj of India, and installed a standard Indian menu.
The dining room reminds me of a library in an oversize, old Uptown mansion, with low lighting and a blend of classical and world music playing in the background. An assortment of Indian furnishings lends a vague Sixties feel.
The best entrees involve meats and fowl. The monthly Riverbend tapas crawl makes a stop here, with good small plates being served.
